About Percentage Change
The change between two numbers as a percentage, in either direction. It is the general case that percentage increase and decrease are both instances of, and the one to reach for when you do not know in advance which way the figure moved. A free online calculator, no account, nothing stored. The result is worked out where you typed the numbers.
How to use it

Percentage change against percentage points
If a rate moves from 10% to 15%, it has risen five percentage points and also risen 50%. Both are correct and they measure different things, and the ambiguity is exploited often enough in reporting that it is worth naming. Percentage points compare two percentages directly; percentage change expresses the movement relative to where it began.
What it does not do
- A change measured from zero has no meaning: the calculation divides by the baseline, and there is nothing there to divide by.
- With negative starting values the sign of the result becomes ambiguous, and the figure is best avoided there.
Questions people ask
- Which number is the baseline?
- The one you started from. Change is measured relative to it, so swapping the two gives a different percentage even though the absolute difference is identical.
- Why can I not calculate change from zero?
- Because the calculation divides by the starting value. Dividing by zero is undefined, and any tool reporting an infinite or 100% increase from zero is inventing a number.
