About Dominant Color Finder

Sometimes you need one colour, not a palette: a background behind a product photo, a placeholder while an image loads, a theme colour derived from a hero shot. This returns the single colour that best stands for a picture, with transparency excluded rather than counted. No sign up, and no account to create. The single colour is found online, free of charge, without uploading the image, and nothing produced here carries a watermark.

How to use it

  1. Open the imageAny common web format. The picture is read in the page and is not sent anywhere.
  2. Take the colourCopy it as HEX or RGB. For a placeholder, this is the value to paint behind the image while it loads so the page does not flash white.

Dominant is not the same as average

Averaging every pixel in a photograph of a red apple on green grass produces a muddy brown that appears nowhere in the picture. Clustering finds the colours that actually occur and reports the largest group, which is why the answer here looks like something you can see in the image.

What it does not do

  • The largest area is not always the subject. A portrait against a big sky returns the sky, because that is genuinely the dominant colour of the image even though it is not what the photograph is about.

Questions people ask

Why is the result the background rather than the subject?
Because dominance is measured by area. A tool that guessed at the subject would be making an aesthetic judgement, and it would be wrong often enough to be useless for placeholders, which is the main reason people need this value.
Does a transparent PNG return white?
No. Fully transparent pixels are excluded from the count, so a logo on transparency returns a colour from the logo rather than from the nothing around it.
