About Investment Calculator
A projection of what a lump sum and regular contributions become at an assumed rate over time. The word doing the work is "assumed": this models the scenario you describe, and nothing in it forecasts a market. A free online calculator that retains nothing. Your contributions are projected in the page and then discarded.
How to use it
- Enter the starting amount and contributionsRegular contributions usually dominate the outcome over anything under a couple of decades.
- Choose a rate and be honest about itPick a deliberately cautious number. Build the projection on a hopeful rate and you have written fiction with a chart attached.
- Compare the splitHow much of the final figure you contributed against how much was growth. The proportion is usually sobering over short periods and striking over long ones.
Why the curve bends late
Compounding pays growth on previous growth, so the effect is negligible early and dominant late. Over ten years contributions typically account for most of the balance; over thirty, growth does. That is the entire argument for starting early, and it is arithmetic rather than a sales pitch.
What it does not do
- A constant annual return does not exist. Real markets deliver the same average through wildly different paths, and the order of good and bad years matters enormously when you are also withdrawing.
- Fees, taxes and inflation are not deducted, and each materially reduces what a projection is worth in real terms.
- Nothing here is financial advice, and past returns are not a basis for the rate you enter.
Questions people ask
- What rate of return should I assume?
- A deliberately conservative one, and ideally model two or three so the range is visible. Anyone who can tell you the correct figure knows something the rest of the market does not.
- Why does the final figure look so different from a similar calculator?
- Compounding frequency, whether contributions are applied at the start or the end of each period, and whether fees are deducted. Small differences in assumptions compound alongside the money.
