Why regular investing is mostly a behaviour device
Its mathematical advantage over a lump sum is modest and sometimes negative, because money invested later spends less time compounding. Its real advantage is that it removes two decisions — when to start and whether now is a good moment — which are precisely the decisions people get wrong or defer indefinitely. A plan followed beats a better plan abandoned.
What it does not do
- Returns are assumed constant. A real plan experiences volatility, and investing steadily through it produces a different result from the smooth curve shown here.
- Fees, exit loads and tax are not deducted.
- Not advice, and not a prediction. It is your assumption, compounded.
Questions people ask
- Is investing monthly better than a lump sum?
- It depends on what happens next, which nobody knows. Investing steadily removes the need to time an entry and smooths the price paid; a lump sum has historically done better on average simply by being invested longer. The regular approach wins on behaviour, which is usually the binding constraint.
- Why is my actual balance below the projection?
- Because the projection assumed a constant return and your investment did not have one. Fees and tax also sit between the two, and neither is included here.
