About Icon Generator
Producing the icon sizes a website manifest and an app expect from a single source image, which otherwise means exporting the same artwork eight times at eight dimensions and naming each one correctly. Generating the set is free and online. The source image is resized without uploading it, every icon comes out clean with no watermark, and there is no account or sign up in the way.
How to use it
- Provide a square sourceIdeally 512 pixels or larger. Detail that reads at 512 will not survive to 16, so the artwork should be simple.
- Generate the setThe standard sizes for browser tabs, home screens and manifests.
- Check the smallest oneA 16-pixel icon is the real test. If it is unreadable there, simplify the artwork rather than the export.
Why one image cannot serve every size
An icon at 16 pixels has 256 pixels in total to work with. Artwork with fine strokes, gradients or lettering turns into an indistinct smudge at that size regardless of how it is downscaled. Designs that survive are built from one bold shape with high contrast — which is why successful app icons look almost crude when seen large.
What it does not do
- Downscaling cannot simplify. A detailed illustration reduced to 16 pixels stays detailed and becomes mud; a genuinely small icon needs separately drawn artwork.
- Platform requirements change, particularly around masked and adaptive icons on mobile. Check current guidance for anything being submitted to a store.
Questions people ask
- What sizes do I actually need?
- For the web: a 16 and 32 pixel favicon, a 180 pixel apple-touch-icon, and 192 and 512 pixel icons for the manifest. An SVG alongside them covers modern browsers at any size.
- Why does my icon look blurry in the browser tab?
- Usually too much detail for 16 pixels, or a non-square source being letterboxed. Simplify the artwork to a single bold shape and supply a genuinely square image.
