About Favicon Checker
The favicon is the smallest brand asset and the one most often broken, because it is declared in several formats for several contexts and nothing complains when one of them 404s. It also appears beside your result on mobile search. Free to use online, and it wants no email from you. The check runs in this page rather than on a server you have to trust.
How to use it
- Provide the pageEvery icon the page declares is listed with its type and stated size.
- Confirm each one resolvesA declared icon that does not exist is worse than none: the browser tries, fails, and falls back to a blank square.
- Check the set covers what you needA classic .ico, an SVG for modern browsers, and an apple-touch-icon for iOS home screens.
Why one icon is not enough
Different contexts want different things: a browser tab wants something legible at 16 pixels, an iOS home screen wants 180 pixels with no transparency, and search results want a square at least 48 pixels that is a multiple of 48. A single large PNG technically works and looks poor small, because detail that reads at 512 pixels becomes mud at 16.
What it does not do
- This reads what a page declares. Browsers also try /favicon.ico by convention even when nothing declares it, so a site can have a working icon that appears nowhere in the markup.
- Search engines cache favicons for a long time. A corrected icon may take weeks to appear beside a result.
Questions people ask
- Why does my favicon not show in search results?
- Most often because it is not a square at least 48 pixels on a side, or the URL changed and the old one is still cached. Google also requires the icon to be crawlable — one blocked by robots.txt will not be used.
- Do I still need a .ico file?
- It remains the most broadly supported format and costs almost nothing to include. Modern browsers prefer an SVG or PNG where one is declared, so the usual approach is to offer both.
