About Pace Calculator
Pace, time and distance are three quantities and any two give the third. This solves for whichever you are missing — the pace you ran, the time a race will take at a target pace, or the distance a session covered. Free to use, with no login screen anywhere. The maths runs locally, so your training numbers remain yours alone.
How to use it
- Enter the two you knowThe third is calculated. Units can be kilometres or miles throughout.
- Read pace rather than speedMinutes per kilometre or mile is how runners think; speed in kilometres per hour is how cyclists do.
- Use it to planWorking backwards from a target finish time gives the pace to hold, which is the number that matters on the day.
Even pacing is not the same as even effort
Holding a constant pace up a hill demands considerably more effort than holding it on the flat, and most runners lose more time fading after an aggressive start than they gained from it. Planning to even pace, or slightly negative-split, is the arithmetic here made useful — the calculator gives the target, and the discipline of holding it is what converts the target into a finish time.
What it does not do
- Constant pace is assumed. Real runs have hills, wind, traffic lights and fatigue, and an even-pace plan is a target rather than a prediction.
- It does not model the physiology — whether a pace is sustainable for you over that distance is a question this arithmetic cannot answer.
Questions people ask
- What pace do I need for a sub-four-hour marathon?
- Enter 42.195 km and a target of 4:00:00 and it returns the pace, which is a little over 5:41 per kilometre. Whether you can hold it for the distance is a separate and much harder question.
- What is the difference between pace and speed?
- They are inverses. Pace is time per unit distance and gets smaller as you get faster; speed is distance per unit time and gets larger. Running conventionally uses pace because it maps directly onto what a watch shows.
