About PayPal Fee Calculator

What actually arrives after fees, and what to charge so a specific amount arrives. The rates are yours to enter rather than baked in, because processor pricing varies by country, by account type, and by whether the money moved internationally. Free online, nothing to join. The deduction is derived here from whatever amount you type in.

How to use it

  1. Enter the fee your account is chargedA percentage and a fixed amount. Both are on your account’s pricing page, and both differ between domestic and international payments.
  2. Enter the amountEither what the customer pays, or what you need to receive.
  3. Read the direction you needNet from gross tells you what lands. Gross from net tells you what to invoice so the right amount lands.

Why grossing up is not just adding the percentage

To receive 100 at 3% plus 0.30, invoicing 103.30 is not enough — the fee applies to the larger amount too. The correct figure is (100 + 0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.03), about 103.40. The difference is small on one payment and not small across a year.

What it does not do

  • No rates are built in, deliberately. A figure hard-coded today is wrong in another country and wrong here after the next pricing change.
  • Currency conversion is charged separately and usually as a spread on the exchange rate, which is not modelled.
  • Chargebacks, refunds and micropayment pricing all have their own rules.

Questions people ask

Why are your numbers different from what I was charged?
Because the rates used are the ones you entered. Check them against your account’s pricing page, and check whether the payment was treated as international or involved a currency conversion — both change the fee.
How do I make sure I receive an exact amount?
Use the gross-from-net direction, which solves for the invoice figure. Adding the fee percentage to your target under-collects, because the fee also applies to the amount you added.
