About Stripe Fee Calculator
The payout on a charge, or the amount to charge so a target lands in your account. As with any processor, the rate depends on your country, the card, and whether the payment crossed a border — so the rate is an input here rather than an assumption. The fixed fee is what hurts on small charges
A percentage scales with the transaction and a flat fee does not, so the effective rate on a small payment is dominated by the flat component. At 2.9% plus 0.30, a charge of one unit loses roughly a third of its value while a charge of a hundred loses about three percent. That asymmetry is the argument for minimum order values.
What it does not do
- Additional charges — currency conversion, instant payouts, disputes, and per-country surcharges — are not included, because they are conditional and specific to an account.
- Rates are not hard-coded. Anything published today is wrong somewhere else today.
- Refunds generally do not return the original processing fee, so a refunded sale costs more than it earned.
Questions people ask
- Why does grossing up need division rather than addition?
- Because the fee is charged on the total, including whatever you added to cover the fee. Dividing by one minus the rate accounts for that; adding the percentage does not and leaves you slightly short every time.
- Does this include currency conversion?
- No. Conversion is charged separately, usually as a margin on the exchange rate rather than a line item, so it cannot be derived from the percentage and fixed fee alone.
