About Tax Calculator
Applies tax rates and thresholds that you supply to an amount, and shows the breakdown band by band. It deliberately has no rates built in: those differ by country, by year and frequently by circumstance, and a baked-in figure would be wrong for most people looking at it. Free online, no sign-up, nothing retained. Your figures are used to produce the estimate and then dropped.
How to use it

- Read the band breakdownHow much falls in each band and what each contributes, which is where marginal and effective rates separate.
Marginal is not effective
In a banded system, moving into a higher band taxes only the portion above the threshold at the higher rate — not the whole amount. Your marginal rate is what the next unit earned is taxed at; your effective rate is total tax divided by total income, and it is always lower. The belief that a raise can leave you worse off comes from confusing the two.
What it does not do
- No jurisdiction, no year, no rates. Everything comes from you, which is the only way a general calculator can be honest.
- Real tax systems have allowances, credits, reliefs, phase-outs and separate treatment for different kinds of income. A banded calculation is a simplification of all of that.
- This is arithmetic, not tax advice. For anything consequential, ask someone qualified in your jurisdiction.
Questions people ask
- Why does it not know my country tax rates?
- Because rates change every year in most places and differ by circumstance within a country. A built-in figure would be silently wrong for most visitors, and silently wrong is worse than asking.
- Will earning more ever leave me with less?
- Not from banded rates alone — only the amount above a threshold is taxed at the higher rate. It can happen through a benefit or allowance that withdraws sharply at a specific income, which is a cliff edge in that scheme rather than in the tax bands.
