About Open Graph Preview
You find out that a share card is broken by sharing the link, at which point the platform has already cached the wrong thing. Checking the tags first is the difference between a considered preview and a bare URL in a colleague's feed. The preview is free, renders online, and involves no registration. Your URL and copy are handled locally instead of being shipped somewhere.

Why the image needs an absolute URL
A crawler fetching your page from its own infrastructure cannot resolve /images/card.png — it has no idea what it is relative to. og:image must be a fully qualified URL including the scheme. This is the single most common reason a card renders with everything except the picture.
What it does not do
- A preview is an approximation. Each platform crops, truncates and styles differently, and some ignore your tags in favour of their own extraction.
- Platforms cache aggressively. Fixing a tag does not refresh a card that has already been scraped; most offer a debugger that forces a re-fetch.
Questions people ask
- Why is my image not showing?
- Usually a relative URL where an absolute one is required, or an image behind a redirect or a login. Occasionally it is a size limit — very large images are skipped by some platforms and very small ones are ignored as icons.
- Do I need Twitter card tags as well as Open Graph?
- Mostly not. Most platforms fall back to Open Graph when the specific tags are absent. Add the card type if you want a particular layout, and keep the two sets consistent when you do.
