About GPA Calculator
A grade point average weighted by credit hours, which is the only way the number means anything: a four-credit module and a one-credit seminar do not contribute equally, however similar the letter grades look on a transcript. A free online calculator that needs no login. Grades you type are worked out here and are never stored.
How to use it
- Enter each courseThe grade you received and the credit hours it carried. Both come off the transcript or the syllabus.
- Import instead of typingA CSV of courses can be read in, which saves a great deal of typing for a full degree.
- Try excluding a courseRemoving one shows its actual contribution, which is often smaller or larger than it feels.
Weighted, and why the scale matters
Each grade becomes a number on your institution’s scale, is multiplied by the credits, and the total is divided by the credits attempted. Scales differ — four-point is common, some places use five, and plus and minus grades may or may not shift the value. Enter the values your institution uses rather than assuming a standard one, because the same transcript produces different averages under different scales.
What it does not do
- Institutions apply rules this does not model: repeated modules replacing rather than averaging, a lowest grade dropped, pass/fail credits excluded from the average but counted towards the degree.
- Where your institution and this disagree, your institution is right. This is arithmetic, not a transcript.

- Why is my GPA different from the one my university shows?
- Almost always a rule rather than an arithmetic error. Common causes are a retaken module replacing the original, pass/fail credits being excluded, or a plus/minus scale where you assumed whole letters. Check the policy before assuming either number is wrong.
- How do I work out what I need next semester?
