About Grade Calculator
Two questions, one page: what your grade currently is given the assessments returned so far, and what you need on the ones that remain to reach a target. The second is the one worth knowing before an exam rather than after. Free, opens instantly, and holds nothing back behind a sign-in. The maths happens in this tab.
How to use it
- Enter each assessmentGive the score and the weight. Weights are usually in the syllabus as percentages of the final grade.
- Read your current gradeThis is the weighted average of what has been graded so far, which is not the same as your final grade while work is outstanding.
- Set a targetThe calculator returns the mark the remaining assessments need. If that is above the maximum available it says the target is out of reach, rather than printing a number like 112%.
Weighted, not averaged
Averaging your scores only gives the right answer when every assessment carries the same weight. A 90% on a quiz worth 5% and a 60% on a final worth 50% do not average to 75% in any meaningful sense; each score is multiplied by its weight and the total divided by the weight graded so far.
What it does not do
- It follows the weights you enter. Dropped-lowest-score rules, curves, attendance components and late penalties are all common and none of them are modelled.
- Where a syllabus and this disagree, the syllabus is right.
Questions people ask
- What mark do I need on the final?
- Enter your graded work and the weight of the final, then set your target. The calculator solves for the score the remaining weight has to carry, and tells you plainly when no score would be enough.
- Why is my current grade higher than my predicted final?
- Because the current grade only counts what has been marked. If the heavily weighted work is still to come, it can move the final a long way in either direction.
