About Add Watermark
A watermark marks a document as a draft, a copy or confidential, so that a page printed and left on a desk still says what it is. It is a statement of intent rather than a security control, and it is worth being clear about which of those you need. The overlay is drawn on your device, online and free of charge. You stamp the document without uploading it, and nobody asks you to sign up or create an account first.
How to use it
- Open the PDF and type the textShort works better than long — DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, a client name, a date.
- Place itPosition, angle, size and opacity are all adjustable. A diagonal watermark at low opacity across the middle is the conventional choice because it is hard to crop out and still leaves the text readable.
- Save the marked copyEvery page is stamped, and your original file is left as it was.
What it does not do
- A watermark is drawn into the page, not locked to it. Anyone with a PDF editor can remove it, and it should never be the only thing standing between a document and the wrong reader. Use a password for that.
- Very high opacity makes the document hard to read; very low makes the watermark vanish when printed in greyscale. Somewhere around 10-20% usually survives both.
Questions people ask
- Can a watermark be removed?
- Yes, by anyone with the right software. It deters casual reuse and makes the status of a printed page obvious; it does not prevent a determined person from stripping it.
- Will it cover the text underneath?
- Not at a sensible opacity. The watermark is drawn over the page, so at 10-20% the document remains readable while the mark stays clearly visible.
