About Protect PDF
Adding a password to a PDF means the document cannot be opened without it, which is the right control for something going out by email or shared storage. The password is applied on your device, so neither it nor the document is sent anywhere. Securing a document this way is free and happens online in this page, without uploading the file and without transmitting the password. No watermark is added, and you are never asked to create an account or sign up.
How to use it

- Choose a passwordA long passphrase is better than a short complicated one. It has to be shared with whoever needs the document, so it should be something you can send over a different channel than the file itself.
- Save the protected copyYou get a new, encrypted copy; what was already on your disk stays exactly as it was.
What the password does and does not cover
An open password encrypts the document, so its contents cannot be read without it. That is genuine protection. PDF also supports permissions — restricting printing, copying or editing while still allowing the file to be opened — and those are enforced by the reader application rather than by cryptography, so any tool that chooses to ignore them can.
What it does not do
- If you lose the password the document cannot be recovered. There is no reset, because there is nothing holding a copy of it.
- Encryption protects the file in transit and at rest. It does nothing once a recipient has opened it: they can save, print or forward the contents.
- Sending the password in the same email as the document defeats the exercise.
Questions people ask
- Can you recover a PDF password for me?
- No, and that is deliberate. Nothing here breaks, guesses or bypasses protection. The unlock tool removes a password you already know and can type in; it is not a recovery tool.
- Does the password stop someone editing the file?
- An open password stops them reading it at all, which covers editing. Permission flags that allow opening but forbid editing are advisory and rely on the reader honouring them.
- Is my password sent to your servers?
- No. Encryption happens in your browser, so the password and the document both stay on your device. You can confirm it in the network panel of your browser’s developer tools.
