About Compress PDF
Almost every PDF that needs compressing needs it for the same reason: something has refused it. An email attachment limit, an upload form, a portal with a cap. The question is how much quality to give up to get under the number, and that is a decision worth seeing before you commit to it. You decide how far to reduce it. The work is free and happens online on your device, shrinking the file without uploading it, putting no watermark in the output, and needing no account or anything to sign up for.

Where the size actually goes
In most PDFs, images are nearly all of the file and text is almost none of it. That is why compressing a scanned document — which is images of text — helps enormously, and why compressing a text report produced from a word processor often barely moves: there was nothing large in it to begin with.
What it does not do
- Compression discards image detail permanently. The output cannot be restored to the original, so keep the original.
- A PDF that is already optimised will not shrink much, and forcing it produces a visibly worse file for very little gain.
- Scanned text degrades in a specific and recognisable way — letters soften at the edges — so check legibility rather than just the file size.
Questions people ask
- Why did my file barely get smaller?
- Because it was probably mostly text, which is already compact, or it had been optimised before. Compression targets images, and a document without large images has little to give.
- Can I undo the compression?
- No. Discarded image detail is gone from the output. That is why the original file on your disk is left untouched rather than replaced.
