About Video Metadata Viewer
Inspecting what a video file actually contains — container, codecs, resolution, frame rate, duration and bitrate — and editing the descriptive tags without re-encoding a single frame. Inspecting a file is free and needs no account. It reads the video where it already sits rather than uploading it, and nothing here sits behind a sign up.
How to use it
- Open the fileThe container is read locally and its streams are listed.
- Read the technical detailsCodec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate, which together explain why a file will or will not play somewhere.
- Edit the descriptive tags if you need toTitle, author and similar fields are metadata and can change without touching the video stream.
The container is not the codec
An .mp4 is a box, not a format. Inside it the video might be H.264, HEVC or AV1, and the audio AAC or something else. This is why one MP4 plays everywhere and another refuses on the same device: the extension is identical and the codec inside is not. Checking the codec is the first step in diagnosing a file that will not play.
What it does not do
- Editing tags does not touch the video. Changing resolution or codec requires re-encoding, which is a different operation entirely.
- Not every container stores every field, so some tags may be unavailable depending on the format.
Questions people ask
- Why will my MP4 not play on this device?
- Usually the codec rather than the container. HEVC and AV1 are not supported everywhere, while H.264 is supported almost universally. Check the codec here before assuming the file is corrupt.
- Does editing metadata re-encode the video?
- No. Tags live in the container alongside the streams, so changing them rewrites a small header and leaves the video data untouched. It is fast and lossless.
