About Trim Video
Cut a clip down to the part that matters — the useful minute of a long screen recording, the take without the false start. The trim happens in your browser, which is the point when the footage is something you would rather not upload to a stranger’s server. Trimming is free, and the clip is cut inside this page, so a private recording is never uploaded and nothing comes back watermarked. No sign up either.
How to use it
- Open the videoCommon formats your browser can play will load. Nothing is uploaded; the file is read from disk into the page.
- Set the start and endScrub to each point and mark it. The preview plays just the selection.
- ExportThe trimmed clip is saved to your device as a new file, leaving the original as it was.
Cutting on a keyframe, and why the start can drift
Compressed video stores occasional complete frames and describes everything between them as changes from the last one. A cut can only be exact where a complete frame sits, so asking for a start point between two of them means either re-encoding the section or moving the cut to the nearest one. Moving it is faster and lossless, which is why a trim can begin a fraction of a second from where you marked it.
What it does not do
- A long recording can exhaust what the tab is allowed to hold, so something that works on a desktop may not on a handset.
- Trimming is not frame-exact in every format. Where a cut has to land on a keyframe the start may move by a fraction of a second.
- A dedicated editor will do this faster. What you get in exchange is that the footage never goes anywhere.
Questions people ask
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. The file is read and processed in the page, which you can confirm by watching the network panel while the trim runs — the bytes never appear in a request.
- Why did a large video fail?
- Almost always memory. A browser tab has a bounded amount and video decoding uses a lot of it. Closing other tabs or using a desktop browser usually gets it through.
