What makes a frame work at thumbnail size
A thumbnail is often shown a couple of hundred pixels wide, so anything depending on fine detail disappears. A clear subject filling much of the frame, strong separation from its background, and no motion blur are what survive the shrink. The most striking frame in a clip is frequently not the one that reads best small.
What it does not do
- The exported frame can only be as good as the video. A heavily compressed clip yields a soft thumbnail, and no amount of exporting fixes that.
- Frame-accurate seeking depends on the format. In some files the preview lands on the nearest keyframe rather than the exact frame requested.
