About PDF to PNG
Rendering pages as PNG, which keeps text and line art crisp where JPG would blur them. The right choice for documentation screenshots, diagrams, and anything where the edges matter more than the file size. Quality is the reason to pick PNG, so nothing is re-compressed on the way out. Converting is free and online, needs no account or sign up, adds no watermark, and finishes without uploading the PDF.
How to use it
- Open the documentRendering happens locally; the file is not sent anywhere.
- Pick the pages and the scaleA higher scale renders more pixels, which matters if the image will be displayed large.
- Save the imagesOne PNG per page, numbered so they stay in document order when your file manager sorts them.
Why PNG is sharper here
JPG compresses by discarding detail the eye is least likely to notice, which works beautifully on photographs and badly on a hard black line against white — it produces a faint halo around every edge. PNG is lossless, so a letterform stays exactly as rendered. The cost is a larger file, and on text-heavy pages it is often smaller anyway, because there is less detail to store.
What it does not do
- Text becomes pixels. It cannot be selected, searched or read aloud after conversion.
- PNG files of photographic pages are considerably larger than the JPG equivalent, with no visible benefit.
Questions people ask
- What scale should I render at?
- Enough pixels for where it will be displayed. For a documentation screenshot shown at full width on a high-density screen, twice the nominal size is a reasonable default; beyond that you are paying in file size for detail nobody sees.
- Does PNG keep transparency?
- PNG supports it, but a rendered PDF page has a white background rather than a transparent one, so the output is opaque.
