Banks, payroll systems and insurers routinely send statements encrypted with a password. Once you have opened the file, retyping that password every time you read it — and being unable to search across the set at all — is friction with no security benefit to you. This removes the encryption from a document you can already open, producing an ordinary PDF.

Can this open a PDF when I do not know the password?

No, and it is not intended to. This tool decrypts a document using a password you supply. There is no cracking, no bypass and no recovery — that is a deliberate limit, not a missing feature.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. Decryption happens in your browser, so the password stays in local memory for the moment it is needed and is discarded. It is never sent over the network, written to storage, or included in any diagnostic.

What about a PDF that opens freely but blocks printing or copying?

Those are permission restrictions rather than an open password, and they are enforced by the viewer rather than by encryption. They can be cleared, but consider why they were set: the restriction may reflect a licence you are bound by.

Is it legal to remove a password?

Removing protection from your own documents, or from documents you are authorised to access, is ordinary file management. Circumventing protection on material you have no right to access is not, and varies by jurisdiction. Use this on documents that are yours.

Does unlocking change the document?

Only the encryption is removed. Pages, text, images, form fields and metadata are all preserved exactly, and the file size is essentially unchanged.

Why can I not merge or compress an encrypted PDF directly?

Because every other operation has to read the page contents, and encryption is precisely what prevents that. Unlocking first is not a workaround; it is the step that makes the document readable to any tool at all, including the one you are about to use next.

My bank sends a new statement every month. Do I have to do this each time?

Each file is encrypted separately, so yes — each one needs unlocking once. Doing it as the statements arrive is usually less work than doing a year at a time, and an unlocked archive is searchable as a set rather than one file at a time.
